8 multicolored scarlet macaw parrots, Ara macao, (similar to green winged macaws) are surrounded by a green leaf philodendron leaf grove basking in the sunlight in this tropical jungle macaw parrot nature mandala on a bright orange background with 8 yellow and white sun circles. Macaw parrots live in forest and woodland habitats throughout South America and as far north as southern Mexico. They thrive on a varied diet of fruits, seeds, flowers, and leaves. They are currently under endangered watch due to habitat loss and illegal wildlife trade. Prized by Inca and other indigenous people since Pre-Columbian times, colorful Macaw feathers have been worn as ceremonial decoration. While parrot ownership by royalty and celebrities was popular for centuries prior to his book, Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island” cemented the pairing of pirates and parrots. Seafaring scoundrels, rogues, and pirates are known to have carried parrots aboard their ships for food and for trading on their wayward travels throughout the world. Living 50+ years, Macaws, like African Greys, chatter and mimic speech and sounds, and, can be very affectionate to their human owners. Jimmy Buffet fans are known as Parrots Heads.
