To celebrate the ever popular prehistoric wholly mammoth the Natural History Society of Maryland has partnered with Tim Phelps, a medical illustrator and Professor in The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Department of Art as Applied to Medicine, to provide two images commemorating an historic event with a full color nature mandala print and a black and white coloring page for children. From the society “You’re invited to celebrate the arrival of a never-before-exhibited complete woolly mammoth at the Natural History Society of Maryland beginning in October 2023. The exhibit and educational programming will take visitors on a journey back in time to see and learn and experience Maryland in the Ice Age. What stories will these bones tell? What secrets will be uncovered about the past that can help guide our future?”

Artist Receives Lifetime Achievement Award 2023

Tim Phelps, Medical illustrator and Professor in The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Department of Art as Applied to Medicine, is the 2023 Recipient of the AMI Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Medical Illustrators. The award was presented to Tim July 21, 2023 in Henderson, Nevada at the association’s 78th annual professional conference. “The purpose of the Lifetime Achievement Award is to acknowledge and honor a medical illustrator who has been a Professional AMI Member for at least 30 continuous years, whose extraordinary, lifelong contributions to the advancements of medical illustration and scientific knowledge have set the highest standards of our profession and served as an inspiration to others in the field and whose life, work and accomplishments have significantly contributed to the profession and fellow illustrators. Vesalius Trust Auction Donation 2023

Tim Phelps, a Medical illustrator and Professor in The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Department of Art as Applied to Medicine, has donated 6 different nature mandala prints for the Alan W. Cole Memorial Auction sponsored by the Vesalius Trust for Visual Communication in the Health Sciences. Mr. Phelps’ 11-year interest is in telling important stories of nature celebrating biodiversity in this artistic circular manner outlining and bringing attention to plant and animal species morphology, habitat, and the importance of conservation. Since 1988, the Trust has raised money for scholarships and research grants for students in health science visual communications. One hundred percent of the silent auction proceeds subsidize these student awards.

Tim Phelps, Medical illustrator and Professor in The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Department of Art as Applied to Medicine, donated 6 nature mandala prints sized 32” x 32” for framing and permanent installation in a patient care area in the Department of Radiation Oncology @ Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore MD. This group joins a collection of 11 nature mandalas sized 30" x 30" on permanent display on the 4th floor of the Skip Viragh Cancer Building @ Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore MD donated in 2015. Mr. Phelps’ current 10-year project in creatively crafted representational and symbolic art visually tells important stories of nature celebrating biodiversity in circular mandala and rectangular nature panel forms outlining plant and animal species morphology, habitat, and relationships, while highlighting the importance of conservation.

Tim Phelps, a Medical illustrator and Professor in The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Department of Art as Applied to Medicine, donated a large framed print and a copy of each his full color hardbound mandala books: Nature Mandalas: Wonders of the Garden and Nature Mandalas: Wonders of the Earth, Wind, and Sea (Schiffer Publishing 2016) to the United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore for their fundraising Holiday Ball 2022 in Salisbury, MD. From their website “The United Way “harnesses the power of our community to advance health, education, and financial stability.” Numbering over 1100 examples, Mr. Phelps’ current 10-year project in crafted representational and symbolic art visually tells important stories of nature celebrating biodiversity in circular mandala and rectangular nature panel forms outlining plant and animal species morphology, habitat, and relationships, while highlighting the importance of conservation.

Tim Phelps, a Medical illustrator and Professor in The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Department of Art as Applied to Medicine, is contributing 50% of profit from nature art print sales to the Richmond Senior High School Class of 1971 Scholarship Fund in Indiana for 2021. The Natural History Society Of Maryland Shark Fest

To celebrate the ever popular giant prehistoric mega-shark Megalodon, the Natural History Society of Maryland has partnered with Tim Phelps, a Medical illustrator and Professor in The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Department of Art as Applied to Medicine, to provide two images commemorating this shark fest event in August, a full color nature mandala print and a black and white coloring page for children. Surviving all major mass extinctions, sharks have been on earth for 450 million years. They also call Maryland waters home – including the largest shark to have ever lived, the Megalodon.
