Hoopoes are widespread in grasslands, savannas, and forests throughout Europe and Asia, and, portions of Africa and Madagascar. It is the national bird of Israel and has been mentioned in the Holy Qur"an. As a ground forager it favors an insect diet of cicadas, grasshoppers, ants and crickets. Body parts are considered medicinal in multiple Eurasian cultures and local hoopoe populations are threatened by this ancient enduring practice.
