Description
12 tan and white hoopoe birds with their orange regal crowns and black striped wings are surrounded by 7 tan coneflower blooms in this bird garden nature mandala on a white background.
Hoopoes are widespread in grasslands, savannas, and forests throughout Europe and Asia, and, portions of Africa and Madagascar. It is the national bird of Israel and has been mentioned in the Holy Qur"an. As a ground forager it favors an insect diet of cicadas, grasshoppers, ants and crickets. Body parts are considered medicinal in multiple Eurasian cultures and local hoopoe populations are threatened by this ancient enduring practice.
What a colorful and regal bird this is. The hoopoe, Upupa epops, has zebra striped wings and a glorious black tipped orange-feathered crown that unfolds like a Chinese fan. It has a pinkish tan body and a long pointed beak. It is a member of the same order, Coraciformes, as kingfishers and bee-eaters with only 3 recognized members of the family Upupidae.
