Description
8 orange clownfish, Amphiprion ocellaris, with white stripes bordered by black outlines, and yellow fin rays and spines, are shown living in teal colored slowly swaying tentacles of sea anemones on a white background in this undersea warm water reef nature mandala. The sea anemone, Heteractis magnifica, and the clownfish, Amphiprion ocellaris, share a special mutual bond, or mutualistic relationship, each benefitting from living with the other. The sea anemone provides a safe home and protection for the clownfish living in its poisonous tentacles. The clownfish secretes a mucous covering that protects it from the anemone’s poisonous sting. The clownfish in return provides protection to the anemone against predators and supplies important nutrients from its secreted waste. The bright colored clownfish also can act as bait to lure unsuspecting fish to the anemone’s paralyzing toxic tentacles making them dinner for the anemone. Both animals are found in the warm waters of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and other Pacific Ocean locations.
