A favored butterfly in England, the rare and beautiful male purple emperor butterfly, Apatura iris, is found primarily in the treetops of woodland habitats of tall oak trees in parts of Europe, Eurasia, and Asia. It is immediately recognizable by its iridescent radiant purple wings with white spots and bands on a dark brown base with a small eyespot on its hind wings, and is considered nearly threatened on the IUCN list of Species 2009. It is not a garden visitor and does not pollinate flowers but prefers the honeydew nectar of aphids and visiting mud puddles and dead animals for their nourishment.
