Noted for its red, black, and white coloration, the piano-key butterfly, Heliconius melpomene, with “piano-key” bordered wings is part of a larger group of longwing butterflies many of which are found in neotropic habitats in South and Central America. Their great color variety is noted through 18+ subspecies naming and serves as a warning to their predators that they can be toxic. Piano key butterflies favor the pollen of passionflowers. The depiction of this butterfly is part of a collection of other Heliconius I have created and can be found in my “Butterfly World” collection @ phelpsmandala.com.
