Description
A school of tiny purple and pink fish with beaded scales (zoom in to see their intricate and colorful decoration) swim with a juvenile porcupinefish, Diodon antennatus, or pufferfish under brown and yellow algae leaves of sargassum seaweed. Can you see the shrimp hidden above in the mesh of sargassum? In the ocean floating leafy seaweed algae comfy and cozy carpets called sargassum provide camouflage, comfort, companionship, and protection for many sea creatures like spiny porcupine fishes and delicate shrimp that may spend as long as five years in this nutrition-rich free-floating algal home as each matures into adulthood. Bulbs filled with gas known as pneumatocysts allow the algae to float to absorb the sun’s energy by photosynthesis. This artwork is intended for a children’s book.
