Description
4 broad wing saturnid sienna brown silkmoths with orange bodies and brown feathery antennae, have an eyespot on each of their wings. The moths are displayed on an American Indian orange grid design of squares, triangles, octagons, and diamond shapes with white accents on a solid brown background in this Navajo American Indian silkmoth garden nature mandala. The moth’s brown wings have octagonal designs surrounded by triangles that imitate the moth’s brown, orange and cream eyespots embedded into a woven basket design as a repeat of the grid design in the background. Distinct, multiple large circular and colorful eyespots are visible on the outstretched wings of a variety of moths. This form of mimicry fools birds and other predators into thinking they are staring into the face of another hungry beast. This moment of predator indecision may give a moth time to escape.
