Description
4 green Phacops rana trilobite fossils with multiple segmented legs, an armored segmented exoskeleton and large compound multi-lensed eyes are displayed in a circular design on a light blue background with a multicolored sea coral and scallop shell interwoven mesh in this fossil trilobite nature mandala. Trilobites, ancient and extinct relatives of horseshoe crabs and pillbugs, died out 250 million years ago. They can be considered index fossils, identifying geographic zones and for possible sites of coal, oil and natural gas because they contain hydrocarbon compounds found in these fuel sources. Many trilobites had a pair large compound eyes riddled in a checkerboard pattern of hundreds of calcite hexagonal lenses known as holochroal eyes. Species of Phacops and other similar genera had larger schizochroal eyes with fewer collections of round lenses placed high on their heads that faced in all directions providing a semi circular almost 360 degree view of their undersea habitat to find prey and to elude predators. If you like trilobites, then trundle to my website phelpsmandala.com for this print and many other artful and imaginative images and stories of nature’s wonders. Wander with wonder in the present and in the past; nature’s lessons abound! I hope you will tell others about my art. I appreciate your support.
