Titled " Loose in the Spruce" this is a traditional pen and ink black and white illustration of a Great Horned owl, Bubo virginianus, perched in an old spruce pine tree with multiple pine cones on a white background. Two families of owls inclusive of over 200 species can be found worldwide except Antarctica. The family Tytonidae includes the common barn owl and bay owls. The family Strigidae encompasses the rest, many with which we are familiar, including the Great Horned, screech, saw-whet and burrowing owls. Shared characteristics include: a large head, a circular facial disk, large front-facing eyes centered in the disk, and cryptic coloration to blend into their respective habitats.

For the past 12 years creating nature mandalas is a personal quest. It further defines the joy I have had for the entirety of my life fascinated with and interpreting nature in pen and ink prints, animal doodles and cartoons and now full color representational nature mandalas and nature panels. My nature images cast an artistic eye on the real and imagined architecture of plants and animals.
