3 flying great grey owls with outstretched brown and tan striped wings, scientific name Strix nebulosa, have taken to the air with falling snowflakes with a silhouetted repeating stark tree landscape on a muted warm gray background in this northwest forest winter owl nature image. The great grey owl has a long and slender body almost three feet in length with a five-foot wingspan. Tiny soft branches called barbules that are extensions found on the edges of their flight feathers zip together and silence the sound of their flapping wings to aid their stealth-like flight.
