Description
6 blue winged swallowtail butterflies with black hot rod tribal flames pinstriped in peacock blue visit a garden of silhouette flame shaped muted blue spear flower blossoms on a gray background in this fire fantasy garden nature mandala. Crude attempts at flame painting began in the early 1930s in California. To signify that spirit, dry lake race cars fashioned from stripped down old Fords were often decorated with crude graphics. The biggest boost to flame painting, however, began in the early ‘50s by artists like Big Daddy Ed Roth, Larry Watson, and my mentor Rod Powell. Custom car and rod shops began popping up in the suburbs of Los Angeles in Southern California. Instead of awaiting months of body modifications, by painting cars with wild flame designs-- an owner’s car could more quickly reach the street and cruise the schoolyards and the new drive-ins. Flames soon became as individual as the “driveway painters” and artists who designed them. More recently not only has the artform mutated into a variety of beautiful flowing fire-forms but now enjoys worldwide status as a cultural icon signifying all things HOT!
