Description
5 large muted green African clawed frogs or platanna, Xenopus laevis, with tiny eyes and multiple spots and warts on their backs and 5 smaller light tan xenopus are shown in a spiral swimming and making rings of bubbles in the center of an aquatic setting on a light blue background in this clawed frog African pond nature mandala. Like other members of the frog family, clawed frogs have robust hind legs for propulsion for hopping on land and swimming quickly in the water. Their skin is moist and soft and secretes a mucous barrier for protection from dehydration. Their bodies are oblong and dorsoventrally flattened and marked with colors matching their environment in this case drab shades of brown and olive green countershaded with creamy yellow bellies. Unlike most frogs, they do not possess a vocal sac but both the male and female make trilling sounds from movements of bony structures found in their larynges. Finally the clawed frog has unusually small eyes perched on top of its head with a body length of up to five inches.
